TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA) - Forecasters say it looks like an El Nino is developing.

This is when warmer waters on the surface of the western Pacific Ocean are pushed to the East.

Dennis Feltgen with the National Hurricane Center says ‘if’ it forms it should have an affect on the Atlantic hurricane season.

“One of the effects of El Nino is to increase the wind shear across the tropical Atlantic which historically has reduced the number of tropical storms and hurricanes that would typically form,” Feltgen said.

Feltgen says while that sounds good, it only takes one major storm to hit and make it a bad year.

Hurricane Andrew formed during an El Nino in 1992.
