Tampa Bay Buccaneers Head Coach Greg Schiano was in attendance last night in Orlando to see Rutgers go on to lose 13-10 in overtime to Virginia Tech in the Russell Athletic Bowl. Schiano was joined by over 30 members of the Buccaneers staff and their families as they watched their head coach cheer on the Scarlet Knights.
It’s no secret that Schiano still remains tied to the university after leading Rutgers for eleven seasons. Schiano finished with a record of 68-67 at the helm, including 5-1 in bowl appearances.
In an interview with Steve Politi of The Star-Ledger conducted before the bowl game on Friday, Schiano says he still keeps up with the program because of his involvement building it.
Schiano telling Politi, “I feel their pain. They’re still my kids. I was a lot more than a coach to those kids, you know?”
Although Schiano still keeps up with the program, he told Politi that he does not live in the past. Instead he is focused on his future with the Buccaneers and doesn’t regret leaving the Scarlett Knights.
“I’ve never lived in the hypothetical and I’m not going to start now," he said. "I’m thrilled with the opportunity I have here and I love what I’m doing.”
