When Tim Brown suggested the Bucs didn't fully earn their Super Bowl victory because the Raiders were "sabotoged" by their head coach, it didn't take long for those in the game to respond.
Derrick Brooks joined Steve Duemg on WDAE Tuesday afternoon and naturally was not going along with Brown's version of events.
Even though Brooks didn't choose to slam Brown, he certainly wasn't about to agree.
"I'm not going to dismiss everything that he's saying because I do know him as a person, but I'm not going to discredit what we went out there and did in getting that win," Brooks said.
Brown told a national radio program that Raiders head coach Bill Callahan changed the game plan just two days before Tampa Bay's dismantling of Oakland. He suggested Callahan was good friends with Bucs head coach Jon Gruden.
"We out-executed the offense that knew the checks we were in," Brooks, who was rather animated, said.
Derrick Brooks is one of the most revered players in Tampa Bay history. It’s not a stretch to say he is arguably the best player to ever put on a Buccaneers uniform.
Brooks was a leader on and off the field by his demeanor, his hard work, and his relentless determination.
The Tampa Bay Storm President never called anyone out or threw his teammates or coaches under the bus; he has always spoken with positivity and respect for the game he loves.
Because of that, when Brooks speaks, people listen.
Calling Brown’s comments short of preposterous, Brooks explained why the 2013 Hall of Fame finalist’s claim has little validity and why the 11-time Pro Bowl linebacker feels that the 2002 Buccaneers should not be discredited for hoisting the Lombardi.
“I just think it’s intriguing to me what’s being said,” Brooks said. “But at the end of the day, I just want our supporters to know that we players – you know, we look at this that we went out and we won that game. No one gave us anything. No one, as far as I’m concerned, sabotaged anything. We went out and we earned that victory and we’re celebrating 10 years later.”
“If you look at our offense, their defense didn’t stop our offense at all,” Brooks said with a chuckle.
“So, they can come out and say they want to run the ball, 40, 50 times, whatever – but the fact is, and I think (Raiders QB) Rich Gannon said it earlier, when they got down because they couldn’t stop our offense, it would have been a mute point to run the ball because they were not going to catch up.”
Just as he has always been since arriving in Tampa in 1995, Derrick Brooks is once again the voice of reason – just with a tinge of amusement this time.
