One of the most violent players in NFL history took a bold stand on Wednesday morning in support of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.  NFL Hall Of Famer Ronnie Lott joined 620 WDAE’s Ron and Ian Show, and said that he commends the steps Goodell is taking to make the game of football safer.

“I’m excited.  I’m proud of him.   It’s take a lot of courage,” said Lott.

Roger Goodell has championed efforts to make the NFL safer for players in recent years and has been harshly criticized by current and former players for it.  In recent years kickoffs have been moved up to the 35 yard line, hefty fines have been handed out for helmet to helmet hits, and the term defenseless player has been adopted.   All of which the former San Francisco 49er praises the Commissioner for taking charge on.

“He’s taken a lot of flack for it.  He’s going to continue to take a lot of flack for it,” said Lott.  “That’s what happens when you do things that are bold, when you do things that are changing the ways people look at the league.  But it’s needed.”

The eighth overall pick of the 1981 NFL draft went on to say that Goodell is doing the right thing for the sport of football moving into the future.

“He’s had to do things that a lot of people don’t want to do, and yet it’s the right thing to do.”
