According to a study by Dusseldorf University Hospital in Germany, these are the objects adults are most likely to swallow by accident:
#1.) Fish bones make up between 9% and 45% of all accidentally-swallowed objects.
#2.) Chicken bones are somewhere between 8% and 40% of all accidentally-swallowed objects.
#3.) And dentures . . . which can come loose while people are eating . . . are somewhere between 4% and 18% of accidentally-swallowed items.
#4). Coins weren't mentioned in the Germany survey . . . but other doctors said they would be next on the list.
#5). And toothpicks can cause problems too . . . because they don't show up on x-rays.
Luckily, things that get swallowed by accident pass through the body without a problem 80% of the time. Only 1% of swallowed items require surgery.
